NCS tasks SON on upgrade of IT infrastructure for seamless interface

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has been urged to upgrade its Information Technology (IT) infrastructure to enable a smooth interface with the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) ‘NICIS’ 11 platform.

Comptroller General of NCS, Col. Hameed Ali (rtd.) gave the charge at the weekend when the Director- General of SON, Mallam Farouk Salim and his management team visited the customs headquarters in Abuja.

Salim stressed the strategic roles of the Nigeria Customs Service in the fight against importation of substandard products and acknowledged the historical support given to the agency, while requesting for more strategic engagement in the light of the recent return of SON’s officials to the ports. Responding, Ali agreed that synergy between critical government agencies at the nation’s ports would greatly enhance efficiency and would do much good in protecting the country and its citizens

Ali, who stressed the need for SON to upgrade its infrastructure to enable a smooth interface with the NICIS 11 platform, pledged to do everything in his power to strengthen the partnership between both organisations, while also requesting for customs officers to be trained in International Standards Organization (ISO) certification.

The meeting corroborated the readiness of the Nigerian Customs Service to discharge its statutory responsibilities of protecting the national economy through trade facilitation, revenue generation and anti-smuggling activities while providing the needed support in safeguarding the nation from importation of substandard goods through collaboration with the SON, as the designated authority.
