Milner signs one-year contract extension

Liverpool midfielder James Milner has signed a one-year contract extension that will see him remain in Anfield for an additional year.

The former Manchester City player, who joined Liverpool in 2015 on a free transfer, was a key figure for Aston Villa for two seasons where he made 71 Premier League appearances while netting 11 goals until 2010.

According to reports, the midfielder had to take a pay cut to ensure he is made part of Jurgen Klopp’s plans for next season.

The 36-year-old, attaining 289 appearances for the club with 26 goals while fabricating 44 clinical assists for Liverpool, won 6 trophies with the Reds including a UEFA Champions League and FIFA World Club trophies.

Confirming the report, Liverpool on their official social media handle said, “The vice-captain, who joined the club in 2015, is set to remain with the Reds for a further season having agreed to fresh terms beyond the expiry of his previous deal this summer.

“Since arriving on a free transfer seven years ago, the No.7 has helped Jürgen Klopp’s team win the Premier League, Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup and, last season, the Emirates FA Cup and Carabao Cup.

“Milner has played 289 games, the most of any side he has represented in his career, and scored 26 goals during his time at Anfield so far,” Liverpool added.

Milner overwhelmed with the contract extension, has been a stabilising force on Liverpool’s bench, giving Klopp an option in games that prove physically tensed.

“Couldn’t be happier to extend my stay with this incredible club for another year. Playing football is a privilege and even more so here. Thanks for the support, will do my best to repay it,” Milner said after completing the deal.

The former Three Lions midfielder capped 61 times with a goal to his name, got his first call to represent England in 2009.
