Jose Peseiro appointed Super Eagles Head Coach
Jose Peseiro has been appointed as the Head Coach of Super Eagles after the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development headed by Sunday Dare granted the approval of the nation’s football governing body to engage the Portuguese coach.
Several world-class coaches were shortlisted for the Super Eagles’ top job after the disappointing outing by the team, led by interim coach Augustine Eguavoen, in the 2021 African Cup of Nations in Cameroon.
Former Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde, former PSV coach Philipe Cocu, and former PSG and France coach Laurent Blanc were all shortlisted alongside the Portuguese gaffer, but the NFF, after the screening, found Peseiro most eligible for the job.
However, the Sports Ministry unsatisfied with the selection process conducted by the NFF, after the latter forwarded the name of Jose Peseiro as the chosen candidate, told the nation’s football governing body to do
a thorough screening and also give a level playing ground to all the candidates.
The Sports Ministry reminded the NFF that the senior men’s national team coach would be paid from the coffers of the federal government and as such, demanded that a proper job, devoid of sentiments, favouritism, and partiality, be done.

Snippets from an anonymous source revealed that the Sports Ministry would have preferred a local coach to take over the Super Eagles job, with Sunday Olise in the loop for consideration. This is a move totally in variance with the NFF’s position to hire a foreign coach.
According to the NFF, Peseiro is expected to lead out the Super Eagles for the first time during the upcoming
tour of the United States of America, during which the three-time African champions will slug it out with Mexico and Ecuador ‘A’ Teams in prestige friendlies.
