The Imo State government has brought succour to victims of flood-ravaged communities in Imo State as the government through the Imo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission, ISOPADEC began the distribution of relief materials to people of affected communities in Ohaji/Egbema and Oguta Council areas of the state.
Deputy Governor of Imo State, Professor Placid Njoku, who represented the Governor at the occasion presented the materials for distribution to the affected beneficiaries at the different designated centres.
Presenting the items to beneficiaries at the first occasion held at Abacheke – Egbema, the Deputy Governor conveyed the heartfelt sympathy of Governor Hope Uzodimma to the victims of the flood disaster assuring them that there were not alone in the grieving moment.
He disclosed that the relief intervention from the State Government was aimed at providing comfort and complementing the earlier support from the State Government to the affected persons through the provision of temporary accommodation facilities and necessary support materials such as food items.
Professor Njoku said that the government of Imo State has come to commensurate and empathise with the victims for the losses they have incurred.
While encouraging the victims to persevere in the face of the current environmental challenge, Njoku charged them not to lose hope saying the state government is not relenting in the effort to find enduring solutions to the intermittent menace.
“There are many people here who have lost a lot to this flood, don’t lose hope, I am so relieved to learn that you and your families survived, we have no control over natural disasters but we do have control over our minds. Let us not give up in these challenging times. Please accept my deepest sympathies for your loss.

“You will not walk alone, we will take care of your welfare, hot meals will be provided daily, and we will engage the Federal Government to come to your rescue” he promised.
Also speaking, Chief Charles Orie, the Managing Director and CEO of ISOPADEC, advised the victims to “cry no more” saying that the state government in collaboration with his commission have come to assuage their worries.
According to him, “the camp government set up in the area is to promote temporary comfort pending the receding of the floods, we will continue to provide for you.”
He said that the recent flooding across some states in the country was a sad reminder of the devastating effects of global climate change.
Responding, an indigene of the area and Minister of State for Education, Rt. Hon Goodluck Nana Opiah on behalf of the people thanked the Governor for his thoughtfulness and prompt intervention.
Opiah who decried the insensitive posturing of oil-producing companies in the area to the sufferings of the people called on the state government to quickly engage the oil companies to cause them to support to the communities.
The Traditional Ruler and the Nze Obi of Egbema, Eze Goodluck Ezeoba Ariaga thanked the Governor for his prompt intervention in answering the call of the people.
The visit also took the Deputy Governor and his delegation to Girls Secondary school, Oguta in Oguta LGA where palliative materials were distributed to victims in the area.
The items distributed include Mattresses, bags of Rice, Blankets, Water Gallons, Indomie and tomatoes among others.
The Deputy Governor was accompanied on the visit by the Chief of Staff, Sir Nnamdi Anyaehie, the Deputy Chief of Staff, Barrister Emeka Agbo, Commissioner for Environment, Prof. EJC Duru, the Special Adviser to Imo State Governor on Public Enlightenment, Prince Eze Ugochukwu, the Special Adviser New Media, Mrs Nneamaka Okafor and several others.
