The sharp increase in enrollment of pupils and students in Taraba state has been attached to the construction of 1165 classrooms and the renovation of additional 934 classrooms across the state.
Speaking yesterday at the Commissioning of the DDI model School in Nukkai area of Jalingo metropolis, the Commissioner of Basic and secondary education, Johanne Jigem, said the visionary project is among the numerous revolutions that were undertaken by the outgoing administration which has improved the standard and quality of education in Taraba.
The outgoing government said he has devoted enormous resources not only to raising educational standards but also improving the learning and teaching environment for students as well as staff.
Model schools have been cited in the three senatorial districts of the state, according to the Commissioner, and have reduced the number of out-of-school children in the state.
“increased the number of primary schools from 1826 to 2290, as well as the number of secondary schools from 225 to 306 since 2015 to date.
“These good initiatives resulted in a dramatic spike in enrollment and a lopsided student-to-teacher ratio was remedied with the recruitment of the famous 3323 Rescue Teachers, whose appointments have now been made permanent, thus, significantly lowering youth unemployment.”

On his part, the state Governor, Arc. Darius Ishaku who spoke through his deputy, Engineer Haruna Manu, cautioned the public, especially the immediate community, about vandalism to this critical project and to ensure that this facility, built with scarce public funds, is maintained for the benefit of the people of the entire state.
He also encouraged the project’s beneficiaries to consider themselves fortunate and to approach their studies with seriousness and determination.
The Executive Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (TSUBEB), Yakubu Agbaizo, decried the way and manner in which host communities have continued to encroach on school lands belonging to the state government.
He warned persons involved to desist from such acts as the government will no longer take it lightly with them.
