Goods worth billions burnt as traders, okada riders clash in Abuja

There was civil unrest at the Dede building material market along Kubwa-Zuba expressway, Abuja, on Wednesday, as Igbo traders and Hausa okada riders clash.
Details of cause of the clash were sketchy at press time.
Available information, however, has it that the crisis broke out after a trailer allegedly crushed a woman to death after she fell from a commercial motorbike following the recklessness of the bike man.
The death of the woman was said to have angered traders in the area, thereby setting the motorbike ablaze.
In retaliation and defence of their colleague, other bike men started burning shops belong to the traders.
Properties worth billions of naira were destroyed.
Shop owners were forced to close their shops to avoid being attacked.

Security operatives were subsequently deployed to calm the situation.
Speaking on the development, Josephine Adeh, spokesperson of the Police in the Federal Capital Territory, said the Police were yet to get full details on the matter.
“Right now, we are there and we are trying to calm the situation down,” Adeh said.
