The commissioner further explained that the approval has been transmitted to the state House of Assembly to study the relevant laws establishing the university for amendment and to effect the name change.

Former Governor Ibrahim Shekarau had renamed the university after Aminu Dantata at the end of his tenure, but Rabiu Kwankwaso reversed the directive when he was re-elected as governor of the state in 2011.
