Four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka has been defeated in the first round of the French Open by 2019 semi-finalist, Amanda Anisimova in straight two sets 7-5 6-4.

Anisimova also defeated the 20-year-old this year in the third round of the Australian Open, to pose herself as a nightmare of the Japanese.

Osaka, who pulled out of the 2021 French Open in Roland Garros citing mental health issues may decide to withdraw from next month’s Wimbledon following the reduction of tournament points by the tennis governing body. The Trumpet Gathered

According to Osaka, performing in an event that has been reduced to a mere exhibition will affect her mental psychology which may see her not performing to the utmost capacity.

She said, “I would say like the decision is kind of affecting, like, my mentality going into the grass like I’m not 100 per cent sure if I’m going to go there.

“I would love to go just to get some experience on the grass court, but like at the same time, for me, it’s kind of like – I don’t want to say pointless, no pun intended, but I’m the type of player that gets motivated by… seeing my ranking go up.

“I think the intention was really good, but the execution is kind of all over the place,” Osaka added.

She continued: “I’m not sure why, but I feel like if I play Wimbledon without points, it’s more like an exhibition.

“I know this isn’t true, right? But my brain just feels that way. Whenever I think something is like an exhibition, I just can’t go at it 100 per cent.

“I’m leaning more towards not playing given the current circumstances,” Osaka said.

27th seed Anisimova, who ended Osaka’s French Open campaign in the first round in a two-set win, will play 100th world-ranked Donna Vekic in the second round.
