Hosting age grade championship, Nigeria rescued Africa, says CAVB

President of Confederation of Africa Volleyball (CAVB), Bouchra Hajij commended Nigeria for rescuing Africa by hosting the U19 Girls African Nations Volleyball Championship for a second time.

Hajij said Nigeria ensured the event’s calendar was not altered to an uneven date.

According to the CAVB President, during a technical meeting held in Bolingo hotel, Abuja, to officially declared the U19 Girls African Nations Volleyball Championship open, all Sub Saharan Africa volleyball nations should make the age grade championship their priority to develop the game.

Hajij, who was represented by the President of Confederation of African Volleyball (CAVB) Zone 3, Ali Yaro, insisted that the Sub Sahara volleyball should ensure they attend the champion despite the prevailing economic challenges.

“Nigeria for the second time are rescuing Africa in hosting the age grade tournaments,” Hajij said.

“I commend the President of Nigeria Volleyball Federation, Engineer Musa Nimrod for ensuring this championship is not rescheduled for a later date.

“I know the economy is bad but I am calling on other Sub-Saharan African countries to ensure they attend the age grade championship,” he charged.

Meanwhile, the President of Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF), Engineer Musa Nimrod revealed that Nigeria’s strength lies in the age grade championship.

He revealed that Nigeria is laying a solid grassroots foundation for young players to excel and play professional volleyball outside the country.

Nigeria’s first match is against Cameroon, a familiar foe, who defeated them on three occasions in the previous edition, on Friday, by 5:00pm.

However, the head coach Elishama Elim has assured Nigerians that this will be a different ball game as Nigeria U19 Girls have undergone intensive preparation for this tourney.

Three countries namely Nigeria, Cameroon and Egypt are the participating countries in this year’s U19 Girls Championship.
