FIFA U20: Gusau invigorates Flying Eagles ahead of Brazil after thrashing Italy 2-0

By Oviri Kelvin, Abuja

The President of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, urged the Flying Eagles, Nigeria’s U20 team, to strive for victory against Brazil in their final group game at the FIFA U20 World Cup to maintain their winning mentality.

He made the statement after the Flying Eagles surprisingly defeated Italy 2-0 in Mendoza, Argentina, to take the lead in Group D.

Despite bookmakers favouring the Italians before the match, the Flying Eagles dominated the game and scored two goals in the second half to secure their victory, courtesy of two well-taken goals by Salim Fago Lawal and Jude Sunday.

Gusau congratulated the team for reaching the knockout stages and emphasized the importance of maintaining a winning mentality.

“I want you to celebrate but quickly, put this behind you and focus on the game against Brazil,” he said. “Nigerians are proud of what you have achieved in qualifying for the knockout stages after only two matches. But we must sustain the winning mentality, so we have to go for victory against the Brazilians on Saturday.”

He urged the team to focus on their upcoming match against Brazil and strive for victory to progress further in the competition.

He added, “Once the winning mentality is sustained, we can go all the way.”

The deserving victory means the Flying Eagles have qualified for the Round of 16 at the FIFA U20 World Cup, ahead of their clash with Brazil in La Plata on Saturday afternoon.
