Ondo court remand 23-year-old for killing his grandmother

Friday Omosola, Akure

A 23-year-old, Vincent Awonugba, has been remanded in a correctional centre for allegedly murdering his 68-year-old grandmother, Florence Olaoye.
The prosecutor, Abdulateef Suliaman, told the court that Vincent stabbed his 68-year-old grandmother on her neck after a dispute over his unusual evening movements.

The defendant was arraigned on one count of murder which violated Sections 316 and 319 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 37, Vol. 1 Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.

Suliaman prayed the court that the defendant be held in custody pending legal counsel from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions, DPP.

Recall that police had earlier arrested Vincent Awonugba on August 6, 2022, for the murder of Florence in her house located in Labata Orimolade in Ondo West Local Government Area, in Ondo State.

However, the plea of the defendant who appeared in court without legal representation was not accepted.

He said he was innocent of the crime, stressing that neighbours deliberately linked him to his grandmother’s death because they were always at loggerheads.

In his ruling, the Magistrate, Tope Aladejana, remanded the defendant at the Olokuta Correctional Centre pending advice from the DPP, with the case adjourned till September 27, 2022, for mention.
