Court convicts internet fraudster for 5 years in Benin

A Federal High Court sitting in Benin City on Thursday convicted and sentenced an internet fraudster popularly referred to as ‘yahoo boy’ to five years imprisonment for fraud.

The yahoo boy identified as Samson Obademi was said to have been arraigned before Justice S. M. Shuaibu on a one count charge of impersonation by the Benin Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), The Trumpet gathered.

A statement by the commission’s spokesperson, Wilson Uwujare, on Friday said Obademi fraudulently impersonated the identity of an American, Mr Steven Sammy, on 23rd April 2021 with the intention to defraud unsuspecting persons. “Obademi (M) sometime between January and 23rd April 2021 at Owo, Ondo State did fraudulently impersonate the identity of Steven Sammy, an American with intent to obtain money and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 22(2) (b) (ii) of Cybercrime (Prohibition Prevention, etc) Act 2015 and punishable under Section 22(2) (b) (iv) of the same Act,” he said.

Upon arraignment by the anti-graft agency, the defendant pleaded guilty to the charge. Following his pleas, the prosecution counsel, K. U. Udus prayed the court to convict and sentence the defendant accordingly.
