Calvin Bassey joins Ajax in club record deal

Rangers defender Calvin Bassey has completed a move to Ajax after the Dutch club reportedly paid £22.5m to the Scottish club, Rangers, for the versatile player.

Bassey, who recently popped up on the wanted list of Ajax after Manchester United signed Lisandro Martinez to Old Trafford, was a superb player for the Gers from last season’s winter transfer window to clinch the Scottish Cup for Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

The Super Eagle, at the close of last season, has been on the watch list of several Premier League clubs with reports linking him to an imminent move to reunite with Steven Gerrard at Villa Park. The Trumpet Gathered

However, last season’s Dutch league champions under Erik Ten Hag, before the Dutch gaffer took over the Red Devils’ job, spotted the Nigeria international as the perfect replacement for the Argentina international who has gone to reunite with the United boss at Old Trafford.

According to a report, Bassey, who can play on either the left-back wing and central defensive positions, fits into what Ajax rightly needed which railroaded his deal into a five years contract at Amsterdam.

Outstandingly, Bassey’s record transfer deal makes him the most expensive sale by Gers and second in the entire Scottish league, behind Kieran Tierney, who moved from Celtic to Arsenal for £25m in 2019.

Rangers in a statement to confirm the deal said Bassey has joined ajax.

“Rangers FC can today confirm Calvin Bassey has joined Ajax in a deal which is the largest in Rangers’ history,” Gers said.

“Calvin leaves with best wishes from everyone at Rangers and we thank him for his hard work and commitment over the past two seasons,” the club added.

Ajax on the official handle said, “Meet out No.33.”

However, Giovanni van Bronckhorst will have to look for a replacement, which a former Rangers striker stated will be difficult to find a perfect match for Bassey, whose superb performance last season catapulted him to the limelight.
