By Paul Michael, Defence Editor, Abuja

There was shock in the Nigeria Police Force on Tuesday night as a Deputy Inspector General of Police of the Force Criminal Investigations Department (FCID), Joseph Egbunike, reportedly slumped and was confirmed dead in his office.

Until his death, Egbunike was in charge of the FCID, which is the highest investigating arm of the Nigeria Police.

Its functions include investigation and prosecution of serious and complex criminal cases within and outside the country. The department also coordinates crime investigations/prosecution throughout the force.

Egbunike had, in late 2021, headed the Special Investigation Panel constituted by the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba to investigate suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Abba Kyari, over money laundering allegations by the United States’ Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

He hailed from Onitsha, Anambra State.
