BOWFT: Edo Queens, Nasarawa FC, others secure semi-final spots

Edo Queens, Nasarawa FC, Robo Queens FC and Delta Queens have advanced to the semi-finals of the Betsy Obaseki Women Football Tournament (BOWFT) after an impressive display in the quarter-finals of the tournament.

The ten-day tournament, in its second edition, started on September 7, 2022, and will run through September 17, 2022.

Edo Queens sailed through to the next round after crushing their opponent, Heartland FC of Owerri with a 4-0 score line.

The four-goal haul is shared between Edo Queen’s Eunice Godwin, who scored a hat-trick and Heartland FC’s Kelechi Orji who scored an own goal in the 76th minute. The three goals by Eunice Godwin were scored in the 40th, 44th and 46th minutes of the match.

Similarly, FC Robo Queens comfortably qualified for the semifinals after hitting six goals past their rival, Confluence Queens.

Shukurat Oladipo opened the campaign for Robo FC with a goal in the 19th minute, disrupting the usually compact Confluence Queens of Lokoja.

Rukayat Oladiti and Nwokodia Favour pulled in the second and third goals of the match in the 42nd and 44th minute, ending the first half 3-0 in favour of Robo FC.

Fifty-five minutes into the second half, Kehinde Akinwande scored for the Lagos-based Robo FC before Taiwo Lawal pulled netted a brace in the 59th and 77th minutes of the match to humble Confluence Queens.

Meanwhile, the battle between Royal Queens and Delta Queens ended 2-1 after 90 minutes of play in favour of the Delta-based club.

The first goal was a converted penalty by Favour Ijeje of Royal Queens in the 31st minute before Chinansa Agoh equalized in the first three minutes of the second half. The decider of the match came in through Vera Samuel’s 71st-minute strike, sending the Royal Queens out of the tournament.

The decider between Nasarawa Amazons FC and Naija Ratels ended 3-2 after Nasarawa FC’s Dooshima Tarnum pulled in the last goal of the match in the 73rd minute to decide the match in favour of the Lafia-based team.

The tournament, which is Nigeria’s only pre-season women’s football championship, is a brainchild of the Edo State First Lady, Mrs Betsy Obaseki. The tournament themed ‘Say No to Drugs’, is aimed at raising awareness of the adverse effects of drug abuse among youths.
