Mauritius won the appeal to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) against Sao Tome and Principe to feature in the group A among Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Guinea Bissau in the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

In a statement by CAF’s Director of Competition, Mr Samson Adamu confirming the development to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), he asserted that the appellant won its case before the Disciplinary Committee of the continental football governing body.

According to Mauritius’s appeal, Sao Tome and Principe had featured a player who tested positive for covid19 in the preliminary qualifiers between both countries.

Mauritius’ prayers were that CAF should disqualify Sao Tome and Principe, who have already been drawn into the same group as Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Guinea Bissau.

However, CAF, after a review of the appeal, passed a judgement voiding Sao Tome and Principe’s eligibility to feature in the group qualifiers of the 2023 African Cup of Nations.

Nigeria matches have been scheduled for next month in Abuja against Sierra Leone on June 9, 2022, before flying to Mauritius four days later to take on The Dodos on June 13, 2022.

What made the issue became of interest to Mauritius was that the player, who was accused of contracting the covid-19 virus, scored the only goal in the clash that edged Mauritius out of the 2023 AFCON qualifying series.
