The 1984 class of Old Students Association of Federal Government College, Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom state in partnership with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has donated a 3.5 KVA Solar Energy plant to their alma mater.
Speaking during the presentation ceremony on Tuesday, the captain of ’84 an Estate Surveyor and Valuer ESV Akan Umo-Otong who led his classmates in the laudable gesture went down memory lane, recalling how the idea was mooted as well as selection of the contractor from several bidders and the completion of the project to the needed specifications.
He, however, explained that the project which was conceived during their visit to their alma mater during their 2019 Reunion was slowed down by the outbreak of COVID-19 which resulted in lockdown in 2020.
He said the second phase of the project will soon commence and assured the next phase will provide solar energy for the boys’ dining hall and preparatory classes.
He appreciated the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for partnering in their concept and providing some funds for the project and solicited for same financial support in the second phase of the project.

The representative of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Godfrey Ntaji thanked the class for the zeal to give back to their alma mater and promised to forward their request for further support to the appropriate quarters with an assurance that their request will be granted.
Ntaji charged the principal of the college to ensure the security and maintenance of the project so that it will stand the test of time.
The principal of the school Mr. J. N. Ezeogu expressed gratitude for the gesture adding that the project was a good and welcome development as an example of former students giving back to the society that made them in various fields of human endeavors.
He said that the project was timely as it will illuminate the female dining hall and preparatory classes, he thanked the Central Bank of Nigeria for contributing to the success of the project.
Responding on behalf of the students, the school Head girl Miss. Nomu Ruth Baribefi thanked the donors on behalf of the students and expressed her happiness and appreciation for the project, saying it will help them in their academic work.
