AFCON 2023: Nigeria drawn in Group A
By Oviri Kelvin
Nigeria has been drawn in Group A of the 2023 African Cup of Nations to be hosted by Cote D’Ivoire next year.
The three-time African champions in the draws that took place on Tuesday in South Africa, also have Sierra Leone, Guinea Bissau, and Sao Tome and Principe or Mauritius in the same group.
Nigerians could recall that in the recently held continental tournament in Cameroon, the Super Eagles had performed excellently in the group stage, raking in maximum points but lost to Tunisia by a lone goal in the round of 16 to crash out of the 33rd AFCON event, The Trumpet gathered.
However, the team, expected to bounce back from its poor AFCON and World Cup outings, will be managed by a new technical adviser whose name will be announced soon by the Nigeria Football Federation (NNF).

Following the nation’s failure to also qualify for the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup, Augustine Eguavoen stepped down with the NFF relieving the entire Super Eagles coaching crew of their jobs.
The last time Nigeria failed to qualify for the AFCON tournament was in 2017 having also failed to qualify for the 2015 edition.
