Protesters demand justice over death of suspect in police custody

By Isaac Olamikan

Some protesters under the banner of Talalawa Parliament have petitioned the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Philip Ogbaudu, to unravel the mystery behind the death of one Godspower Omo who died in the custody of operatives of the State Police Command in Benin City.

Giving a background of their petition, the petitioners alleged that Godspower as stated by his mother Mrs. Queen Omo, “was apprehended by some members of the Edo State Security Network(ESSN) and was taken to their base at Museum Ground, Oba Ovanramwen Square.”

That on getting to the Museum Ground to ascertain what transpired “she discovered that her son was handcuffed and beaten mercilessly by the said men of the Network that apprehended him.”

On further enquiries Mrs. Omo was told by the men of the Security Network that “they were looking for Godspower friend, by name Fatai that a girl accused him of rape. That not until they see Fatai they will not release Godspower.”

The said Fatai was said to have been brought later but the ESSN men “still kept Godspower incommunicado.”

Going further, Mrs. Omo stated that she, her son and Fatai were transferred to the state police headquarters where they were detained and Godspower was kept “in the cell with uncovered body after the beating. The police did not bother to treat him, release him or charge him to court only for her to hear of the demise of her son on the 4th day of February 2022 after spending close to one month in police custody.”
