Ishaku urges FG to capture North East in rail line projects

By Suru Charles

A call for the federal government of Nigeria to capture the northeast region of the country in its rail line projects has been made by Governor Darius Dickson Ishaku, of Taraba state.

He made the call while receiving delivery of food and non-food items from the North East Development Commission (NEDC) for onward distribution to victims of the recent flood disasters in the state.

The rail line projects, if extended to the region, he believed would go a long way to address the numerous challenges presently bedevilling the zone.

Apart from being carried along in the rail line projects, he was also noticed to have beckoned at the commission to reconsider the award of Jalingo Numan road as well as Jalingo zing Mayo-Belwa road.

Decrying the deplorable condition of the roads, which according to him “posed serious challenges to the economic development of the area” fixing the roads, he believed would not only benefit Taraba and Adamawa states but the region and the nation at large.

Items observed to have been presented to the victims through the governor by the Managing Director of the Commission, Alhaji Mohammed Alkali, include; bags of rice, cans of vegetable oil, Children’s wear, mats, wrappers, blankets, to mention but just a few.

Stressing that the gesture was to cushion the effect of the disaster on the people, the federal government, according to Alkali, “was worried over the condition of the victims.”

While expressing the destination of the commission to intervene in critical situations that affected the people of the region, the commission, as stated by him “had already awarded contracts for the construction of three mega schools in each of the three Senatorial districts in the state.

Apart from the number of human lives that were lost in the disasters, which occurred in Lau, Ibi and Karim-Lamido councils, several valuables including houses and farmlands were washed away by the floods.

Apart from the NEDC, which has deemed it fit to reach out to the victims with relief materials, The Trumpet learnt no government agency including the state government, has thought it wise to extend the much desired olive branch to the victims of the disaster in Taraba.
