NFF, family, to honour Orok Oyo’s posthumous centennial

Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) helmsmen will on 27 August join the family of Etubom Oyo Orok Oyo, a former three-term Secretary-General of the nation’s football governing body and Nigeria’s first-ever Member of the FIFA and CAF Executive Committees, in Cross River State capital, Calabar, to honour him on his posthumous centennial birthday celebration.

NFF said Etubom Orok fondly adored as ‘Mr Football’ would have been 100 years on 27th August 2022, having been born on that date in the year 1922.

According to the report from the Glass House by the NFF Director of Communication, Ademola Olajire, Etubom Orok is one of Africa, nay the world’s most renowned football administrators, who served as Secretary-General of then Nigeria Football Association in 1958, and then between 1961 and 1963, and also between 1967 and 1971. After that era, the renowned football administrator moved to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) where he served as a Member of the Executive Committee from 1974 to 1988.

NFF added that Etubom Oyo was also Nigeria’s first-ever Member of the FIFA Executive Committee, and retired as Life Vice President of CAF. He died on 10th September 2008.

Meanwhile, Chief Orok Oyo, son of the late renowned football administrator, on Wednesday, divulged that they are planning a huge event in honour of their late patriarch in collaboration with the NFF.

Orok Oro said the well organised event, will witness the launching of a book and a foundation in honour of their father.

“We are planning a glamour event to celebrate Etubom Oyo Orok Oyo, and the family is working with a number of friends and the NFF to make it a memorable occasion,” Orok Oyo said.

“On the day, we will be launching a book that is a compilation of all the writings and speeches of the late Etubom Oyo, and we will also be launching the O3 Foundation on the same day,” he enumerated.

Furthermore, the NFF added that the nation’s football governing body will lead a strong delegation through Mr Amaju Melvin Pinnick, NFF President, alongside Dr Mohammed Sanusi, Secretary General, to honour “Mr Football” in Calabar.
