Rivers United, Asante Kotoko clash to showcase African culture in Turkey

Rivers United is set to clash with Asante Kotoko of Ghana in an exhibition match facilitated by the City Gate Travel and Tours with the objective to sell the African culture, showcase African talents beyond brotherliness that exists between both countries.

The Pride of Rivers who are the champions of the Nigeria Professional Football League and winners of the Ghana Premier League Asante Kotoko will lock horns in the contest tagged Super Cup on Wednesday, 25 August, 2022 in Turkey.

In a report by the club to announce the development, the agreement among the three parties, Rivers United, Asante Kotoko and organisers City Gate Travel and Tours was brokered and documents have been signed to that effect on August 5, 2022, in Port Harcourt.

The Deputy Chief Executive Officer of City of Gate Travel and Tours, Mr Mizbawu Issah, explained that the primary objective why the company embarked on the Champions of Champions clash is to sell African culture to the western world.

He said, “The company wants to enhance the relationship of both teams just beyond brotherhood to other activities, sell the African culture and showcase talents, hence the decision to take the match to Turkey.”

Chief Dr Okey Kpalukwu, General Manager of the Pride of Rivers noted that he was surprised with the development while making references to what the club has achieved in last season.

Dr Kpalukwu further commended the organisers of the exhibition match which he acknowledged will be advantageous to the team’s preseason preparations.

“I was not surprised at the invitation considering what the club has been able to achieve as a brand,” he said.

“I commend the organizers of the Super Cup, City Gate Travel and Tours for the offer as it will compliment the preseason programs already scheduled by the club’s management,” Kpalukwu acknowledged.

Recall that Rivers United on the presentation of the NPFL trophy to the River State Governor Nyesom Wike, were promised a pre-season tour to Real Madrid as part of their preparations for the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League and the 2022/2023 Nigeria Professional Football League.

Asante Kotoko are expected to be formidable foes to the Pride of Rivers considering the rivalry between both countries in the battle for football supremacy and David Obeng Nyarko, Asante Kotoko Communications and Brands Manager, stressed that the team is invigorated by the clash.
