Kastina IDP records 15 deaths, 35 births

James Danjuma, Katsina

The Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina state has recorded 15 deaths in the last 100 days of its establishment.

This is in contrast to 34 births recorded in the camp located at the Government Girls Secondary School, Jibia, in the same period under review.

Chairman of the IDP camp, Sada Salisu who made this known to newsmen at the camp yesterday, said more than 15,000 people are currently at the camp.

Salisu identified the communities where the IDPs fled from to include, Garin maiwuya, Zango, Shinfida, Kwari, Gurbin Magarya, Sambe Tsauni, Tsamben Kolimbo, and Farfaru.

He said all the affected communities have been deserted and that terrorists have since taken over homes and farmlands, shortly after military personnel that were stationed at some of the communities, were redeployed.

Salisu lamented that basic amenities are now scarce due to the large number of people at the camp, and that food ration had become once a day instead of the normal three.

He also lamented the near absence of security personnel at the camp, adding that the IDPs were becoming apprehensive about the possibility of another attack as the camp is located outskirts of the town.

He called on government to tackle the security challenges facing their communities so that IDPs can return and continue with their lives.

Speaking, the chairman Jibia Local Government Area, Bashir Sabiu said 15 bags of 50kg rice was being cooked on daily basis for the IDPs.

Sabiu said the council area gives N200, 000 every five days for their upkeep, and that a committee had since been set up to ensure judicious use of the money.

He, however, lamented that the council area is faced with frequent attacks by terrorists and that no day goes by without someone being killed by terrorists.

He said the council records at least seven to eight attacks on communities per day, and that more than 100 people are still in the hands of terrorists in the forest.
