World number three Alexander Zevrev has undergone surgery to fix his torn ligament which occurred in the French Open final with Australian Open champion Rafael Nadal at Court Philippe Chatrier.
The German, who lost by a walkover after processing two sets against Nadal, a Spaniard aiming to clinch his 22nd Grand Slam title, hopes to come back better and stronger after the surgery.
According to world number 3 on his social media, he announced that the surgery was successful, adding that this was the best choice to quicken his return to action earlier than expected.
“Surgery was the best choice” for him to return to action as soon as possible, reported BBC Sports.
The world number 3 was trailing 7-6 (10-8) 6-6 against Nadal – who went on to win the men’s singles tournament and claim a record-extending 22nd Grand Slam title – when he badly rolled his ankle and screamed out in agony.
He said all three of the lateral ligaments in his right ankle were damaged.

“We all have our own journey in life. This is part of mine. Next week I’ll reach a career-high ranking of number 2 in the world, but this morning I had to undergo surgery,” Zverev posted on Instagram.
“After further examination in Germany, we received confirmation that all three of the lateral ligaments in my right ankle were torn.
“To return to competition as quickly as possible, to ensure all the ligaments heal properly, and to reclaim full stability in my ankle, surgery was the best choice.
“My rehab starts now and I’ll do everything to.
come back stronger than ever!
“l am continuing to receive so many messages
and would like to thank everyone once again for
supporting me during such a difficult time,” he added
If he had reached the final at Roland Garros and succeeded in lifting his first major in Paris, Zverev would have taken over as world number one.
