Buhari request the senate to confirm Muhazu Sambo as Minister from Taraba, and Federal Commissioners

The President of the Senate, Senator Ahmed Lawan, Tuesday, 14 December, 2021, read the letter from President Muhammadu Buhari requesting the National Assembly to confirm the nomination of Muhazu Sambo as Minister from Taraba state.

Also, two separate requests from President Buhari were, in addition to the previous, read on the floor of the Red Chambers directing the Senate to confirm the nominees for Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and National Population Commission (NPC) as Resident Electoral Commissioner and National Commissioners respectively.

In the President’s letter requesting the confirmation of a ministerial nominee according to NAN, he said, ”in accordance with section147, sub-section two of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, as amended, I have the honour to forward for confirmation by the Senate, the nomination of Muhazu Sambo from Taraba as Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“It is my hope that this submission will receive the usual expeditious consideration of the Senate.
“Please accept, Distinguished Senate President, the assurances of my highest consideration,” Buhari said.

In the same vein, the letter requesting the Senate to confirm the nominee as INEC Commissioner stated that “Pursuant to Paragraph 14, part one of the fourth schedule of the Constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended.

“I hereby forward for the confirmation by the Senate the appointment of the under-listed nominees as National Commissioners for NPC and Resident Electoral Commissioner for INEC.

“The nominees for National Commissioners include Mohammed Haruna (Niger State, North-Central), May Agbamuche, Delta, south-south, Kenneth Nnamdi Abia, southeast.

Others are Maj.-Gen A.B Alkali (Rtd), Adamawa, northeast, Prof. Rader Gumus, Bayelsa, south-south, Sam Olumeku, Ondo, southwest.

“Olaniyi Olaleye, Ondo, southwest, was nominated for appointment as Resident Electoral Commissioner. Their CVs are attached herewith.

“While trusting that the Senate will favourably consider this request and confirm the nominees in the usual expeditious manner.

“Please accept Distinguished Senate President, the assurances of my highest consideration,” Buhari added.

According to the President’s third letter, the five nominees for Commissioners for the National Population Commission (NPC) are Benedict Opong from Akwa Ibom, Mrs. Gloria Izofor, Bayelsa, Mrs. Patricia Kuchi, Benue, Bala Haliru, Kebbi, and Dr. Iyatayo Oyetunbi, Oyo, respectively.
