By Charles Onyekwere,

The Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists(NUJ), Ebonyi State Council, on Wednesday, said the ongoing construction of Bishop Michael Nnachi Okoro flyover in Hausa quarters junction in Abakaliki metropolis by the state government, will save lives following incessant road crashes at the ever busy junction which has claimed many lives. The Chapel also said the flyovers when completed will change the face of the capital city and boost the economy of the state.

Chairman of the Chapel, Comrade Samson Nwafor, stated this in Abakaliki, the state capital, when he led members of the Chapel to inspect the projects executed by Governor David Umahi’s administration in the state as part of the activities marking the 2022 Press Week of the Chapel.

Other projects inspected by the journalists included; multi billion naira shopping mall, Christin Ecumenical Centre, President Muhammadu Buhari tunnel, Akanu Ibiam flyover, International Market flyover and the Market, among others. The Akanu Ibiam flyover when competed, will bring the total number of twin flyovers constructed by the present administration in the state to 14.

Nwafor described the flyover as worthwhile and commended the governor for embarking on the construction which he said will also curb traffic congestion when completed.

He said “as part of our 2022 Press Week, we are here to inspect projects executed by the present administration in Ebonyi State led by Governor Dave Umahi.

“We have inspected some of the projects. We are here in Bishop Michael Okoro flyovers being constructed and we have seen the work on ground. We were around the day the ground breaking was done few months ago and the level of work that is going on here and the pace at which the work is going is commendable.

“I commend the Governor very highly, one for always meeting up with time in all his projects. Sometimes, he will even say that he will complete his projects within maybe 12 months and you will see the projects completed in less than six months.

“The significance of this twin flyover are enormous. One, it is going to reduce traffic. It is also a face lift to the state because as a developing state, the project of this nature has a lot to do in uplifiting the state and it will boost the economy of the state.

“Over time, a lot of lives have been lost in that Hausa quarters junction where the Bishop Okoro flyover is being constructed and with the construction of the flyover, you can be rest assured that the issue of road crashes at this point is going to be a thing of the past as soon as it is completed.

“So, we commend the Governor for his vision, we commend him for doing what is right which will actually uplift the future and the entire people of the state now and in the near future.”
