The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mr. Afam Osigwe (SAN), has urged employers in Nigeria to better support workers by increasing their pay and ensuring their safety at work.
He made this statement in Lagos to honor Workers Day, which is celebrated on May 1 in over 80 countries dedicated to recognizing the hard work and contributions of employees, promoting their rights, and celebrating the labour movement.
Osigwe emphasized that Workers Day is an opportunity to appreciate the dedication and sacrifices of Nigerian workers, who are often the unsung heroes of the nation’s growth.
He stated, “We recognize the crucial role that workers play in various parts of our country. Their commitment keeps our economy, institutions, and daily lives running smoothly.”

He however, pointed out that this day should lead to serious discussions about the challenges many workers face. “Many Nigerian workers struggle with difficult economic conditions, unsafe workplaces, job uncertainty, and wages that don’t keep up with the rising cost of living,” he said. “It’s not enough just to praise them; real action is needed. They deserve fair wages and additional benefits.”
Osigwe stressed that giving workers a fair wage isn’t just a nice thing to do; it’s their right according to the law.
He urged employers in both the public and private sectors to adopt fair labor practices, ensure safe working conditions, and create workplaces where employees can thrive without fear of being mistreated or discriminated against.
