INEC to deploy over 30,000 officials for nationwide bye-elections

INEC bye-election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced plans to deploy over 30,000 electoral officials for the forthcoming bye-elections scheduled to hold across various constituencies in the country.

Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, made the disclosure during a meeting with leaders of political parties on Thursday in Abuja.

According to Prof. Yakubu, the bye-elections became necessary due to vacancies created by the death of some elected officials and court rulings that nullified certain election outcomes.

The elections will take place in 16 constituencies, which include two senatorial districts, five federal constituencies, and nine state assembly seats.

INEC will deploy a total of 30,451 officials to conduct the polls, with over 3,553,659 registered voters expected to participate across 6,987 polling units nationwide.

However, the INEC chairman noted that elections will not hold in Khana II Constituency in Rivers State due to a subsisting state of emergency, and in Talata Mafara South in Zamfara State due to ongoing court proceedings.

The upcoming bye-elections are part of INEC’s ongoing efforts to uphold democratic representation and ensure the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process.
