ICPC secures conviction of aviation ministry staff over employment scam

The Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC) has secured the conviction of Elvis Simon Okerenyi, a staff of the Federal Ministry of Aviation, for his involvement in an employment scam that defrauded a job seeker of N1 million.

A statement issued on Sunday by the commission’s spokesperson, Demola Bakare, Okerenyi was charged with forgery and fraud after he collected N1 million from Titus Tavershima under the pretext of securing employment for him in the federal civil service.

The offence, ICPC said, contravenes Section 320 and is punishable under Section 322 of the Penal Code of the Federal Capital Territory, 2006.

During investigations, Okerenyi entered into a plea bargain with the prosecution, leading to the amendment of the initial seven-count charge against him to a single-count charge.

He pleaded guilty to the amended charge before Justice S. C. Oriji of the FCT High Court.

Justice Oriji convicted the defendant pursuant to Section 270(10) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) and sentenced him to one year in prison, with an option of a N200,000 fine.

The court further ordered Okerenyi to pay restitution of N350,000 to Tavershima, the victim of the scam.

The ICPC in its statement, reiterated its commitment to eradicating corruption and other related offences across all sectors of government.
