Gunmen kill 15 in Plateau community

Tragedy struck the Gidan Ado community of Ganawuri in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State as gunmen unleashed terror on Sunday night, killing at least 15 people and leaving several others injured. Survivors are currently receiving medical care at a local hospital.

The attack comes nearly a year after armed assailants disrupted Christmas celebrations in Mangu, Barkin Ladi, and Bokkos LGAs, prompting state security officials to intensify efforts for a peaceful holiday season. Despite a series of discussions with stakeholders aimed at preventing further violence, these efforts were defied by the attackers who targeted the Irigwe people, wreaking havoc on lives and property.

We just left the community after a mass burial for the victims, while two survivors are undergoing treatment in the hospital,” Shuwa disclosed.

The Plateau State Police Command and Operation Safe Haven are yet to release comprehensive details about the attack. However, Police spokesperson Alfred Alabo assured the public that investigations are underway to uncover the facts behind the tragic incident.

The National Publicity Secretary of the Irigwe Development Association (IDA), Sam Jugo, expressed profound grief over the loss. “The attack occurred at Ri Do, also known as Gidan Ado, a hamlet in Riyom LGA predominantly inhabited by Irigwe natives from Bassa LGA,” Jugo confirmed.

“Our hearts bleed for the demise of our kinsmen, whom we hoped to celebrate this yuletide with. Their lives were cruelly cut short. May their souls rest in peace, and may God comfort their families and the entire Irigwe nation,” he added.
