Gov. Yusuf reaffirms support for press freedom, constructive criticism

Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to press freedom, constructive engagement with the media, and the strengthening of democratic values in the state.

The governor stated this while receiving the newly elected leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kano Correspondents’ Chapel, during a courtesy visit to the Government House on Monday.

Speaking through his Director General, Media and Publicity, Sanusi Bature, the governor noted that the media remains a critical pillar in nation-building and democratic consolidation, stressing that his administration places high value on the contribution of journalists in promoting transparency, accountability, and responsible governance.

“We sincerely appreciate the role of the Correspondents’ Chapel in bridging the communication gap between the government and the people.

“Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is media-friendly and will continue to welcome constructive criticism that promotes good governance and public accountability,” Bature said.

While congratulating the newly elected executives and lauding the peaceful conduct of the election, he emphasized the need for mutual trust and professionalism in media-government relations and assured the chapel of the administration’s readiness to deepen engagement and provide unhindered access to information for all accredited journalists in the state.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel, Murtala Adewale, commended the state government for its continued partnership with the media and pledged the commitment of the new leadership to uphold journalistic ethics in their reportage.

He, however, called for a stronger collaboration to facilitate the timely flow of information and ensure accurate coverage of state policies, programmes, and activities.

The visit also provided a platform for an interactive dialogue on strengthening government-media relations, enhancing media capacity, and ensuring improved access to credible and official information.
