A former Nigerian Senator Ibrahim Musa Kontagora has died at Nizamiye Hospital in Abuja after allegedly being denied urgent surgery due to his inability to immediately pay the full $15,000 required for the procedure.
Kontagora, who represented Niger North Senatorial District from 2011 to 2015 was rushed to the private facility in a critical condition but was left unattended after hospital officials insisted on receiving the full payment before proceeding with life-saving treatment. Although the family reportedly managed to pay a $15,000 deposit, the hospital allegedly refused to act until the remaining $15,000 was settled, citing their strict payment policy.
A close family member revealed that while frantic efforts were being made to raise the balance, time ran out, and the former lawmaker tragically passed away. The hospital has not taken responsibility for the incident, instead reaffirming its policy of full upfront payment for surgeries, even in emergency cases.

The news has triggered a wave of anger and grief, with many Nigerians questioning the ethics of medical institutions that prioritize profit over human lives. Niger State Governor Mohammed Bago was among those who joined efforts to raise the needed funds, but sadly, they arrived too late to save the senator.
Senator Aliyu Abdullahi and other political figures have expressed their condolences to the Kontagora family, calling the incident deeply disturbing and a wake-up call to reform Nigeria’s healthcare and emergency medical response systems.
The late Senator Kontagora is survived by his wife and children. His remains were laid to rest on Thursday at 4:00 p.m. at the National Mosque in Abuja, following Islamic burial rites.
Efforts to reach Nizamiye Hospital were unsuccessful as messages and calls to their official line remained unanswered at the time of publishing this article.
