Flying Eagles head coach hopeful ahead of U-20 AFCON
Aliyu Zubairu, the Flying Eagles head coach has expressed optimism in the ability of his team to navigate through a tough group at the 2025 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, after being drawn alongside North African giants Morocco, Egypt and South Africa.

The tournament, scheduled for April 26 to May 18, presents a stern test for the Nigerian youth team, but Zubairu believes the challenging draw could work in their favour.

“It’s a very good draw. If a team truly aspires to reach the FIFA World Cup, there is no need to shy away from any opponent. Facing Egypt, Morocco, and South Africa at this stage presents a tremendous opportunity. I believe it’s a blessing,” Zubairu said.

The coach dismissed suggestions that his team had been placed in a ‘group of death’, emphasising the evolving nature of African football.

“We need to dispel the notion that this is a ‘group of death’. In African football, there are no small teams anymore. The key is to prepare very well. A lesser-known nation can surprise everyone if they come prepared,” he said.

In preparation for the continental showpiece, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has already commenced a training camp with a 30-man squad.

The federation has also arranged two friendly matches against the Egyptian U-20 team in Cairo on February 25 and 27, as part of their preparations for the tournament.

These warm-up games will provide Zubairu with an early opportunity to assess his team against one of their group opponents, while also helping the players adapt to North African conditions.
