Ex-SGF Babachir Lawal finally dumps APC

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal has officially dumped the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Lawal, who served under former President Muhammadu Buhari during his first term, made this announcement in a letter dated June 29, 2025, addressed to the APC chairman of Bangshika Ward in Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

In his resignation letter, Lawal stated: “I am writing to formally inform you of my resignation from the All Progressives Congress.

“I will soon disclose my new political affiliations, as I plan to collaborate with others to improve living conditions for all Nigerians.

“This resignation is effective immediately. Please extend my best wishes to the other party members.”

Lawal supports the emergence of a new political coalition to challenge President Bola Tinubu and the ruling APC in the 2027 general elections.

In an interview with Vanguard newspaper in June, Lawal dismissed the idea of creating a new political party, stating: “We have decided to join an existing party. Key members have already resigned to allow for new leadership.”

He explained the coalition’s decision to avoid forming a new party: “Some parties were embroiled in legal disputes, leadership conflicts, or were simply unwilling to accommodate us. However, we have found a party that is both welcoming and viable.

“There isn’t enough time to establish and stabilize a new party before the 2027 election campaigns begin.”
