Delta Governor celebrates Okonjo-Iweala’s historic WTO reappointment
Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has lauded the reappointment of Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), describing it as a monumental achievement for Delta State, Nigeria, and Africa.

Okonjo-Iweala, a globally celebrated economist and development expert, hails from Ogwashi-Uku in Delta State. Her illustrious career includes two terms as Nigeria’s Minister of Finance, during which she spearheaded economic reforms that led to Nigeria’s exit from crippling foreign debt under former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

In a statement released on Friday in Asaba by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, Governor Oborevwori commended the WTO and its stakeholders for recognizing Okonjo-Iweala’s unparalleled competence and granting her a second term in office. He emphasized that her reappointment, unopposed, is a clear testament to her exceptional leadership and unwavering commitment to global trade and economic development.

“On behalf of my family, the government, and the people of Delta State, I heartily congratulate Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on her well-deserved reappointment as Director-General of the WTO,” the governor stated. “You have been a beacon of excellence, showcasing the brilliance and resilience of Nigeria and, indeed, Delta State on the global stage.”

Oborevwori praised Okonjo-Iweala’s trailblazing efforts in poverty reduction, economic reform, and international development, highlighting her role in fostering global trade policies that benefit developing nations.

The governor further assured Okonjo-Iweala of the state’s prayers and unwavering support as she continues her journey to solidify her legacy as one of the world’s most influential economic leaders.

Okonjo-Iweala, first appointed WTO Director-General in 2021, made history as the first African and the first woman to lead the global trade body. Her reappointment reinforces her reputation as a powerhouse in global economic governance, inspiring millions across the continent and beyond.
