Bakassi LGA faces devastation as gully erosion eats up parts of headquaters

Chairman of Bakassi local government area of Cross River, Effiong Etim Okon has disclosed that unless urgent intervention is given, many parts of the local government will be swept away by gully erosion.

The devastation is currently estimated at 10-13 meters in depth and 450 meters in length

He said this over the weekend when he gave an account of his five months in office.

Okon listed mostly affected areas to include “back of the local government headquarters in Ikot Effiom and its adjoining housing estate.

Others are the Obutong section of the housing estate, cutting access between the two developing areas.

He emphatically said that beyond the challenge of infrastructure, one of the factors that impede progress is gully erosion.

Okon observed that gully erosion was one of the major headaches he is grappling with five months into his tenure.

He appealed to partners like NEWMAP and other agencies for intervention, considering his desire to take governance to the doorsteps of the people.
