Alhassan Yahya emerges 1st NUJ president from North East
Mr. Alhassan Yahya, a staff of the Gombe Media Corporation, becomes the first Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) president from the North-East.

A former deputy national president of the NUJ, Yahya, was elected at the 2-day 8th triennial delegates’ conference, which took place in Owerri, from November 27-28, 2024. Early on Thursday morning, Yahya was proclaimed the victor by Mike Ikeogwu, the chairman of the electoral committee.

Ikeogwu declared: “With the authority granted to me, I hereby declare that Alhassan Yahya, who received the most votes, is returned as president of the NUJ for the next three years.

In his acceptance speech, he promised to uphold the NUJ constitution, while promoting the principles of fairness, equity, and justice.

The new NUJ president takes over for Chris Isiguzo, who served two six-year terms and was from the South East.

Yahya won the election with 436 votes, defeating his opponents, Bamidele Atunbi (97 votes) and Garba Mohammed (39 votes).
