Abubakar Malami, SAN, former Attorney General of the Federation and a prominent figure in Kebbi State, has formally resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and announced his defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The announcement, made via a public statement on July 2, 2025, follows what Malami described as “wide consultations and deep personal reflection,” adding that the decision was neither born out of anger nor ambition, but rather a patriotic response to the current state of the nation.
Malami declared that Nigeria is bleeding, painting a grim picture of worsening insecurity, economic collapse, and failed governance, particularly under the leadership of the APC-led federal government. He lamented that while terrorism, banditry, and kidnappings have ravaged the North and other parts of the country, the government appears more invested in politics than the protection of its citizens.
“Insecurity has taken over our homes. Banditry, kidnappings, and terrorism have become part of our lives,” Malami wrote. “Our economy is in shambles. Prices of food have tripled. The poor can no longer feed their families. Youths are hopeless, and the government is consumed by propaganda instead of solutions.”
The former Minister did not hold back in his criticism of the ruling party, accusing it of abandoning governance for political patronage, where appointments, projects, and policies are dictated by loyalty rather than national interest. “I cannot remain part of a system that watches in silence as Nigerians suffer and die,” he stated.

Malami’s defection to the ADC aligns him with the opposition coalition that has recently gained momentum with high-profile entrants including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and other disenchanted leaders. The ADC, once a fringe party, is fast becoming the rallying point for opposition forces seeking to unseat the APC in the next general election.
“This is why I am joining the ADC, a platform built on the values of justice, inclusion, competence, and national renewal,” he said, signaling a renewed political mission focused on rescuing Nigeria from decline.
To the people of Kebbi State, Malami reassured them of his unwavering commitment, describing himself as their “son and servant.” He said the move was necessary to amplify their voice, protect their interests, and restore hope to a region and country in need of true leadership.
In a passionate call to Nigerians, Malami urged the public to join the movement to reclaim the nation, saying, “Let us rise above fear and reclaim our nation. Nigeria belongs to all of us.”
