Two students of the University of Ibadan have won the ‘Get creative with plastic’, organised by the French Embassy in Nigeria.
The announcement was made by the university’s Director of Public Communication, Mrs. Joke Akinpelu, on Tuesday.
She explained that the competition was part of the French Embassy’s efforts to promote awareness about reducing plastic use on campus.
The University of Ibadan was one of 10 universities in Nigeria selected to take part in this initiative, which is supported by the French Embassy.
The programme was led by the university’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Kayode Adebowale, and coordinated by Prof. Oluyemisi Bamgbose, who is also involved in research and partnerships.
Mrs. Akinpelu highlighted that Prof. Aina Adeogun from the Department of Zoology was in- charge of the university’s participation in the initiative.
Working with the students’ union and various university offices, they encouraged many students to get involved.

The university had over 300 students participate, submitting around 100 creative ideas for the competition.
This high level of engagement made the University of Ibadan stand out among all participating schools, showcasing its commitment to environmental issues.
Because of their exceptional effort, the University of Ibadan was the only university to have two winners in the challenge.
The first winner, Debbie Paul, is a third-year student studying environmental health science, and she won in the music category.
The second winner, Adekunle Akorede, also a third-year student, is studying physiology and won in the writing category.
Mrs. Akinpelu emphasised that this achievement reflects the university’s leadership in tackling plastic pollution and promoting environmental sustainability in Nigeria.
